Flapjack Lakes via North Fork Skokomish River, Gladys Divide by JennyR

We arrive at the trailhead about 8am, parking lot was about 1/2 full at that time and bathrooms were well stocked and clean. The North Fork Skokomish trail approaching the turn to Flapjack is wide and well-maintained - easy walking the whole way. Once you turn up towards Flapjack the trail becomes narrower and much steeper. Some trees were down across the trail, but they were fairly easy to navigate around. There were a few campers around the lake, but most sites were still open when we got there shortly before noon. We decided to continue up to Gladys Divide after talking with another group about the conditions. The trail up to Gladys is more overgrown and the snow starts in earnest about half way up. We used spikes and poles, which weren’t strictly necessary but did make it easier. There was a boot path through the snow which made navigation simple. The views from the divide were fantastic! We returned to Flapjack for a quick snack, a swim, and some time to bask in the sun before coming down. More campsites were filled when we returned to the lake. We got back to the car about 9pm. Total mileage 18.69. Fantastic big hike to celebrate the start of summer!

Wow, I am surprised (and thrilled!) that the lakes are free of snow already! I was wondering about the gravel road to the TH (before it enters the paved portion of the park). It is usually a mess of potholes...is that still the case or is it decent? Thank you!

Still lots of potholes on the gravel road. We have a Rav-4 and made it through slowly with no issues on the road. But you definitely need to take care on that gravel section,

I did Gladys divide May 23 see previous report headed back up wed June 12. I am bringing microspikes and trek poles. Was there any snow bridges. ? And or significant post holes you encountered ? Did feel pretty safe going on the snow portion ?

Sorry for typos. Did the snow travel portion seem reasonably safe. 1 mile past the lakes ? Thanks.

Yes. The snow up to the divide was stable - no bridges or postholing in our experience. Another hiker went to the top of Gladys with spikes and poles and he said that he had no problems at all. We stopped at the divide, so I can’t fully confirm that, but I wasn’t surprised considering the conditions we encountered. I was glad to have spikes and poles with me, but didn’t feel the need for anything else and I would have been okay even without them.
