Hannegan Pass and Peak — Saturday, Jun. 8, 2024

North Cascades > Mount Baker Area
About a mile in.

Did the hike to Hannegan pass as an in & out on a 80-degree day. Hike had many many minor stream crossings. The water level was higher/more quick on the way back down due to snow melt. There was light mud but could easily walk through. Encountered snow at 4.2 miles from the trailhead right before Hannegan campground. Post holing was not an issue (there were others footprints to follow that were pretty compacted) until the last two switchbacks up to the pass. Very steep here. Some locations were with holes over snow melt streams so needed to be careful. Trekking poles helped in these locations. We mistakenly forgot our yak tracks/crampons and they would have definitely helped. Saw two groups with snow shoes but not required.  Once up to the pass we followed the trail up the hill to the north to get views of the valley. Lots of snow here too. People were continuing on to the peak with mountaineering gear but we turned around at this point. Enjoyable hike and lots of wildflowers!! Saw stream violets, swamp currants, fendler's waterleaf, and solomon's plume in abundance! Beautiful hike and cannot wait to do it again and go up to the peak.

NOTE - the road to the trail head is in bad condition. Had many many potholes and was slow moving. Parking was also a minor issue. Had to park up the road along the edge as the mini lot was full.
