Beautiful day to be out amongst giants. Our trail crew hiked in a mile on the North Fork Sauk River Trail. There are a few trees to work around but not challenging. We split up into two teams: One worked on rebuilding a rock retaining wall at a creek washout and our team backtracked to saw out some 4 x 6 from a dead fall tree for a future puncheon project. Good leadership and great volunteers made the day go quickly. Someday I'd like to come back and hike out further on this beautiful trail.
Afterwards, I took a quick hike up to the Red Mountain Lookout site since it leaves from the same trailhead, and I'd never drive all the way out here for a two-mile trail. There's a big blowdown mess at the beginning that looks daunting but isn't. There's also a few step over and two scoot under trees. Overall, a nice trail that offers a limited view at the lookout site.
The Mountain Loop Highway is in great shape right now. Forest Road 49 is rough so patience is a must, but any car can make it.
