Trip Report

Hannegan Pass and Peak — Monday, Jul. 8, 2024

North Cascades > Mount Baker Area
View coming down from Hannegan Peak

From the perspective of two relatively fit but not avid hikers:
Departed from the trailhead around 6:30am, and returned to our car around 1:45pm. My friend's Garmin watch indicated that we had totaled 12 miles of walking through the day (this included a short visit to the camp area to scope it out (~ .5 miles) and an instance where we doubled back (~ .25 miles)).
The trail was in great shape the whole way up, the only obstacles were short patches of melting snow that posed no threat. They were not near any cliffs. It was not too deep--when my friend punched through one part it was about 1.5 feet deep.
At this time of year, snow melt provided us intermittent small waterfalls/water crossings to dip our hats and buffs into for the first 3-4 miles of the hike, which was very welcome due to the overwhelming heat. A creek was also available in the campsite areas.
The first 3-4 miles were a very gradual climb, increasing in steepness as we went along. Once we made it to the start of the climb to the peak the trail became steeper, again generally increasing in steepness as we got closer to the peak.
The trail is exposed most of the way through with intermittent shady spots. Starting early on a hot day was critical for us because on our way up the trail up to the campground was completely shaded but on the way down it was fully sunny. The trail from the campground to the peak is nearly completely exposed. Even though we started very early, the hot day got to us and we were very grateful for the 2.5 liters of water/person that we packed. My friend finished hers and I was close to done with mine by the end.
Similar to the grade of the trail, the views were splendid from the start and only got better as we went on. There was a point where we weren't sure if we should push for the rest of the peak but we are so glad we did. The 360 degree view was gorgeous. Also saw a cool bird (maybe a grouse) at the top.

Wildflowers galore!

Thanks for the trip report. Couple questions

1. Are there water sources near the campsites below the pass?

2. What is the view like from the campsites below the pass?

3. Did you see sites above the pass / on the ridge? If so - is there a water source up there?

Thanks in advance for your potential reply!

Did you see some campsite spots above the Pass? And if so -

Hello!
1. Yes, there are water sources near the campsite as of when I went. A pretty large creek.
2. The valley around is amazing, the campsites are fairly exposed with some possible shady spots. You could probably see the mountains around no matter which site you picked.
3. I didn't go beyond the ridge/pass and I did not see sites around there. The sites in the camping area are very well marked (they have a sign that looks like a tent around each camping spot) and I didn't see anything like that. I did meet some backpackers that camped past the junction to get up the peak (further along hannegan trail), they called their camp the boundary camp. It looked like there would be water sources there as well, but the people we ran into said the view was just okay over there.
