Trip Report

Park Butte — Saturday, Jul. 20, 2024

North Cascades > Mount Baker Area

Wayyy too many people camping where they were not supposed to be camping. The rules are really clear, and it sucks to see people trampling the meadows. Please recreate responsibly and be a good steward for our precious public lands; the rules are there for a reason.

No snow on the trail, and the road seems much better than in years past. The water crossings were easy, no need to get your feet wet, even later in the day when the water often rises. Use caution later in the season as the water can change dramatically and rise to cover the bridge.

The fire lookout was packed at sunset. We took a quick look and then decided to leave the lookout and find another place to sit and rest.

Looking up toward Railroad Grade, that trail also seemed clear of snow. But we didn't hike up there so can't say for sure.

Mosquitos were very persistent and bug spray didn't help. Constant biting swarms near the lookout.

Lots of wildflowers, especially in the upper meadows. Saw some toads on the trail in the dark on the way down and could hear pika in the rocks.

One of the most beautiful hikes in WA, absolutely worth doing despite any minor annoyances.
