Mount Rainier Area > SE - Cayuse Pass/Stevens Canyon

I'd been watching for a good report on the snow patches for this trail and when I saw it had finally melted out, I headed up. This hike always feels longer and steeper than the description but still manages to take my breath away every time. The first part of the trail has a couple mud spots but is in great condition. The avalanche lilies seemed at the end of their season until I got up to the scree fields. Lots of Indian paintrbush, lupine, asters, mountain heather and avalanche lilies in full bloom. At nearly 1100 feet of elevation in just 1.3 miles this hike is a lot of UP. Views from the saddle are spectacular. I saw Adams and the top third of Hood as I stepped through the gateway with Rainier in full glory behind me. The bugs were annoying. I tried to take the exposed path over to the tarn while I considered taking the Plummer Peak path, but a snow patch on the most exposed section made me think twice. I posted a video on my blog linked below with more photos. It won't be a deal breaker for everyone, but one errant step is one too many for me. It's a long way down. Pika and marmots hanging around for your entertainment. Just a reminder: trailhead is across the road from Reflection Lake. There are no bathrooms, but at thr Paradise picnic area you're likely to find parking and can use facilities there. I arrived early, so no comment on the timed entry. Gorgeous day!

That marmot looks like he's passed out from eating too many ripe berries!
