We decided to do a sunrise hike around the Skyline Loop. If you enter the park before 7am (or after 3pm) you don't need a timed passed. We arrived at the park just after 5am and began hiking before 6. Sunrise was about 6:10 or so. Next time I go I'd like to shoot for being at panorama point at sunrise. It would take about two hours to get there from the trailhead depending on how quickly you hike, and you'd need some warm gear if you decide to sit a while and watch the sun coming up.
I'd suggest going clockwise. I'm a bit tempted to put "a few hazards on the trail" because there are portions of the trail that are rocky/loose and one part where just a touch of scrambling was needed to get up some rocks. It is absolutely doable for most people, but if you have mobility concerns it is something to consider. I was able to do the trail without poles, but if they make you more comfortable, I'd suggest bringing them.
We went on a day where the conditions said "Cloudy" with no rain projected. This might not be true for every situation, but we were still able to see some amazing views despite the clouds. Don't cancel your trip thinking the weather report has to say sunny!
