First off, folks aren’t kidding about the potholes in the road. You shouldn’t have trouble even in a sedan, but expect to drive quite slow. Fortunately, it’s a short road to the trailhead.
I’ve hiked this trail many times over the last 30 years, and the trail is in about as good condition as I’ve seen it. It’s still a little rocky and rooty in the lower section, but once you cross the Iron Horse Trail, the recent trail has really spruced things up.
A few things to be aware of… There is a quite significant tree across the trail just above the Iron Horse Trail. Your dog might be able to slide under, but you’ll have to go over, and it takes a little doing. It won’t stop you from proceeding, but be prepared. As others have mentioned, there is indeed a bit of mud here and there from the recent rains, but it’s easy enough to step around. Finally, once you get up closer to the lake you cross a series of scree fields - I believe there are five - and the very middle one seems to have a yellow-jacket nest just off the trail. No one we talked to reported being stung, but you’ll want to be mindful, particularly of your pet, and walk on the outside/downhill side of the trail for that short stretch. Otherwise, it’s a great time of year to be on this trail. Happy hiking!
