First time to Mirror Lake. Don't really know why as it's definitely worth the trip. It's a beautiful destination with a nice hike. I chose to approach going south along the PCT to make it a full day's hike with the opportunity to do a little extra exploring of the approach to Silver Peak.
The road to the trailhead has some long, reasonably good stretches, but there are some deep potholes. I found my corolla managed as long as I went really slow over those parts. The road does get much rougher immediately after the Mt Catherine trailhead. Would recommend low clearance vehicles park there and walk the short distance up to the Silver Peak trailhead. No facilities at either trailhead so plan accordingly.
The day was mild and the forested trail kept the hot sun at bay. There were not any bugs to speak of, which surprised me for this time of the year. I found the trail to be rocky and rough up to the point where the Silver Peak trail breaks off to the right. Glad I had my trekking poles to help pick out my steps, especially on the downhill parts. After that it was a bit smoother, passing alongside several small ponds and under some impressive cliffs. I found very big tadpoles (not for long!) in one of the ponds.
Mirror Lake was a treat, moderate in size with a nice blue shade. Tinkham Peak looms impressively above the lake at one end. I followed the PCT trail as it passes mostly well above the lake, with occasional campsites below and closer to the water, helping myself to the remnants of the blueberry season that will soon be over. The lake is cool, but apparently swimmable. There were a few hardy souls jumping off rocks on the opposite side.
Returning, I explored the Silver Peak trail as far as to the saddle, but did not have time (or energy) to attempt the peak. I found some nice views from the saddle and even was able to look down into the watershed with Mt Rainier in the distance. Also found lots of berries.
Final stats, according to my Alltrails app, were 9.7 miles and about 2200 ft gain.
