This was our first time. We parked near the trailhead sign on the side of the road. That last 15 miles of dirt/gravel road is able to accommodate most vehicles - however be prepared for flying rocks to chip windshields/paint, insane amount of dust, and drivers going way too fast for conditions. We arrived at 6:20am on a Sunday still had a lot of parking available near the trailhead.

In the app it says 1100 elevation gain but the actual amount you walk is about 1500 gain and from the sign we went 6.3 miles round trip. As a beginning hiker (I just started hiking this year) it took 4.5 hours to complete. Next time we will plan to park at the campground and start from there which would probably end up 7.5 miles. The trail wasn’t busy on the way up at all. We didn’t see anyone until we were half way up or more.

The bugs weren’t terrible but I definitely got bit a couple times and had a few encounters with bees that took a bit to leave me alone.

The last half mile is the steepest part but wasn’t that bad. We stopped a handful of times to catch our breath but seemed to go pretty quick. The views are absolutely worth it and there was a very kind volunteer ranger up top who was staying in the tower. Shared the top with maybe 6 other people all spread out.

On the way down we passed a ton of people heading up. Got to the vehicle and the closest parking at that point around 11:00am was more than a mile down the road. There was also a ranger putting notices on vehicles that didn’t have a National Park Pass visible. He was also very nice.

It was a great trail I will definitely be doing it again in the future.
