High Rock — Monday, Sep. 30, 2024

South Cascades > White Pass/Cowlitz River Valley

Arrived at trailhead at 12:00 pm with only 1/2 dozen other vehicles parked alongside the road. The trailhead is not marked, so I was grateful to encounter another hiker to confirm I was headed in the right direction. Hike is a gradual ascent for 1.6 miles to the summit. There are two wooden benches spaced apart along the path to sit down on if you need to catch your breath. There are several peek-a-boo vistas to encourage you upward and onward. The scramble at the top could be a bit treacherous for those uneasy on their feet or with small children. The rock cables are no longer in working condition; walking poles could be helpful. Once at the summit, you can sit at the old fire lookout and enjoy sweeping views of Rainier, Adams, Hood, and St. Helens (weather permitting). Great payoff for minimal effort. Highly recommend!!
