First, the road has been heavily reworked and graded making it very much more feasible to take any vehicle you want to the trailhead. Wow! I did the loop CCW and will definitely go clockwise next time. There is a very steep section between Leroy and Phelps creeks that would be easier to navigate going up rather than down as I did.
I had downloaded the high route in hopes it was passable and glad I did as I never saw the “low” route/trail once I got past Carne Mt. I lost the route near Maude, so I skied down the scree then traversed to the next saddle. You should be comfortable with scree travel on this route as there is a bit of it. Nothing too serious, but be prepared.
There are running water sources, but I was grateful that I had 2 liters in my running vest. Neither Leroy nor Phelps creeks run right next to the trail, so take advantage of the crossings to filter water.
Larches were near peak, and will certainly be full peak sometime this week. Enjoy!
