Trip Report

Herman Creek — Friday, Nov. 15, 2024

Southwest Washington > Columbia River Gorge - OR
406 and 406e junction- take 406e down to Herman Creek and on to PCT

Herman Creek trailhead has been closed, but its open now.  I hiked Friday Nov 15 on an out and back along PCT to Dry Creek Falls.
The trail is in good shape, with no significant blowdowns and generally decent trail conditions.  It was wet, so creeks were full, but I was able to cross with dry feet in just hiking boots.
The parking lot was half full at about 10:30 am, but on my route along PCT the trail was all mine.
I hike this trail for exercise, and I'm thrilled to see it back on my list.  Like most Gorge hikes, it has some elevation gain early on.   But once you get to the PCT, it levels out, allowing you to cover ground both out and back, and then descend back to the trailhead.  That makes the hike seem shorter and faster than 10 miles.
Winter hiking requires some prep-  daylight fades sooner, and rain can cause slides and treefalls and such that can require extra time to navigate.  I bring an extra fleece shirt, dry socks, gloves, and a headlamp this time of year.
