We’re so lucky to live in Washington with many outdoor opportunities that don’t require a trip to the mountains. Don’t forget your Discover Pass for this one.
We started down at the beach by the boat launch. There are some nice restrooms if you need one. We walked along the chilly beach then went up for a walk in the woods. There are some big old trees that somehow survived the logging and forest fires over 100 years ago.

We did the 1/2 mile Al Emerson Loop Trail there in December. The old growth is magnificent and there are 18 interesting signs with pictures along the way!

I thought the same thing when I saw your Witch’s Butter and I compared our pictures, but you didn’t mention the yew trees or interpretive signs so I thought you were probably on a different trail as there were many nice Witches Butters in the area. Did you do the Al Emerson Nature Trail? In relooking at your collage pictures it does look like you have a picture of the leaning yew tree! You are right that we are fortunate to have these type of trail opportunities!

We did the Al Emerson trail and you spotted my leaning yew! I spent 20 years giving Taxol to cancer patients so I always have to pause and appreciate the ancient people who found medicine in nature and eventually the researchers who developed what we have today.

I remember your telling me a few years ago about giving Taxol to patients when I posted a picture of a yew tree in a trip report I had written! I really like their bark color!
