Mount Ellinor — Saturday, Jan. 25, 2025

Olympic Peninsula > Hood Canal
Summit with the pack table we're prototyping

It was a very popular hike Saturday, certainly because of the perfect weather conditions.

There were a lot of cars at the lower trailhead, and it looked like any car could make it up there.  We ventured on to the upper trailhead.  We got to within a couple hundred yards of it before turning around.  I wouldn't recommend for most cars - we had to run at 8 psi and used lockers.  We passed a stuck bronco on the way up and a stuck f150 on the way down.

Boots on the trail at 9:30, summit at 11:30, back to the jeep by 1:30.

The snow conditions were more like ice.  Leave the snowshoes in the car.

Microspikes would do it, but crampons were much easier/safer.  It was probably 75/25 crampons to microspikes on the trail.  Most people had an ice axe, and I'd recommend it.  The snow was hard packed, making glissading fast and difficult to control.  There were great steps dug in, but a slip would send you sliding for a while without an axe.

Saw a half dozen dogs on the trail. I'd love to hear how their paws hold up to the ice before I take my doggo up.
