Puget Sound and Islands > Bellingham Area
Tree across viewpoint area

Another beautiful day hike in the PNW forests! Started around 11 am at the trailhead parking area across from Larrabee State Park on Chuckanut Drive. Made it out and around the lake loop in under an hour then explored a side trail to the ridge on the north side above the lake following a sign for 2 Dollar Trail. Nice peek-a-boo views of the lake and a bit of extra elevation and exertion for the walk. Wandered back to the main viewpoint a mile or so from the road. This is a great open view of Puget Sound and the islands plus a bit of Bellingham residential areas. Also found a geocache stuck in a stump along the trail, which is a first for me! Opened it up to see the signatures and left it where I found it.

6 miles, 1250 feet gained, under two hours total. Trail is a bit muddy in certain areas, but nothing terrible.

Worth noting for trail repair consideration - a large tree has fallen partially across the viewpoint area requiring one to duck under to get close to the wooden rail fence marking the top of the slope. It hasn’t broken the fence, but it’s new within the past week. See picture for planning your trip.
