Summary: Heather Lake is a great alternative to the busier Lake 22 if you're in the Mountain Loop area. The forest road is in good shape and any car should make it to the TH. As for the trail, it's rooty, rocky, and wet in places, but not too difficult if you take your time and watch your footing. There are a couple small snow patches as you approach the lake, but nothing too difficult to cross. I walked around the lake and the southern shore does have more consistent snow. It was icy in the morning and poles/spikes would've helped with traction. However, it was easy enough to walk on rocks. Lots of groups out on this sunny Saturday, but the trail never felt too crowded. I got started at 8am.
