This wide open country is different from what I usually hike (I'm a wet-sider), but spring is the right time to go, so I went on a glorious day. I parked at the Elk gate, not knowing that it's fine to open the gate and drive to the berm. If you don't like driving gnarly roads, park at the sign. I could do with it with a non-high clearance vehicle, but it took skill, and the paint got more scratches. I hiked up to the Y junction, took the western road to the ridge, cut down to the eastern road, and back to the car. If there were more time, a good side trip would be up to 'Baby Head Hill' - maybe an extra hour- which looks like it had the best views.
It's a long drive from Seattle- you can take Wenas road from Ellensburg or take 82 to Selah- the time is about the same. I did one going there and the other back for variety. The trail is in great shape, except for a few trees and some rough segments. It's not a hard hike - 1800ft and 8 miles for me- and the views from the ridge are glorious. It's mostly open, with burned trees, and considerable regrowth. I like these recovering forests- they are part of our environment now - but you might find it dismal.
Flowers - lots and lots. They are not done yet by far. Some are just starting to come out.
No bugs. 60 degrees. Light to strong winds. A few other people. Great views. What else could you want!
