Green Lake — Monday, May. 5, 2025

Puget Sound and Islands > Seattle-Tacoma Area
Me after catching my first ever fish, Glenn the fisherman, and a perturbed bass.

Ah, Green Lake on a sunny afternoon in springtime. I always say Seattlites are like sunflowers, and today was no exception; folks were out in droves walking, roller blading/picnicking, and strolling with their adorable dogs and babies. It's a joyful sight to see.

The main reason I wanted to trip report on this particular walk was to share a delightful surprise interaction. My friend and I were chatting on the steps near the swimming area in front of the community center when a friendly fisherman named Glenn walked up to show us his most recent catch. He then asked if we wanted to try catching one ourselves. Having never caught a fish in my life, and not wanting to harm the creatures, I was unsure at first but seeing that he was releasing all the fish, we decided, "why not?"

Glenn instructed us on how to lower the line into the water and pull it back out when there was a pull on the line. I expected to be waiting with the line for minutes, but lo and behold, I got a bite in seconds! We got a picture with the fish, then Jax took her turn and caught an even larger bass. I had no idea there were so many fish living amidst the stone steps that lead into the beach. Glenn said his family runs a fishing supply business, and he's often there by the steps — so it you'd like to try your hand at fishing, go say hi!

It was a lovely interaction that demonstrated the power of local parks to bring people together.

P.S. It's gosling season. Sweet little fluffy yellow babies abound. Yay!

Nothing like golden hour with a friend at Green Lake!
