This hike should be rated "difficult" because of the dangerous steep ascent/descent on the scree and dirt trail with rolling pebbles that make the trail very slippery. It would help to install metal cables on the steepest sections. However, this is one of the most spectacular trails in Washington once you get up to the top. I appeal to WTA and State Parks department to improve the access and the safety of this trail.

I totally agree with your assessment of the ascent/descent of this trail. I think it is very unsafe for the majority of people going up to the top. Putting in stone steps or cables as you suggest would be an improvement in the safety of this hike.

I do not agree with the assessment that this trail should be rated “difficult”. I often have a fear of heights (actually a fear of falling from a height) and I was able to do the 50 yards or so of scree and 5 feet of climbing the stair-like tops of columnar basalt without fear. Not all trails are going to be accessible to everyone, and it shouldn’t be expected. If it’s beyond your skill level, then turn around.
