Trip Report

Baker Lake - Maple Grove — Sunday, May. 18, 2025

North Cascades > Mount Baker Area
View along trail

Anderson creek (1.2 miles from south trailhead) requires fording or crossing a downed log. No other obstructions along the way. Earlier log blocks have been cut.

This was my first hike, and the view at the end of the trail was incredible, even on a cloudy day. I went on a Sunday at 11:30am (mistake) and saw three other individuals and a dog that sniffed me (adorable). The wooden bridges were slippery due to the light rain but on a dry day it is probably much more pleasant. Anderson creek was the most challenging part and I opted to crawl across the downed log to the right of the creek because it was flowing pretty strongly. It was twice as hard on the way back. Wildflowers were blooming and there were many openings in the trees with great but obstructed views of the lake. As you go on, the views start to clear up until you reach the end and have a completely unobstructed view of Mt. Baker. The view was absolutely worth it, although I considered turning back multiple times after seeing the beautiful views on the way; on mile 3, I realized that “8 miles, roundtrip” means 16 miles in total. Whoops!
