It was an exceptional trail—incredible variety of plants and beautiful views of rock crags, the river, moss-covered forest, boulders, giant old growth trees, and more. Did 8.5 rt and it was very manageable with a combined 900 ft elevation gain. Some mud on trail in very few spots, and great solid foot bridges over small streams. Saw a black variety of the Townsends chipmunk, a woodpecker going into its tree nest, some very round tiny birds chirping in the underbrush. bobcat next to the trail (which I just missed seeing). Road to parking lot is smooth—ample parking even on a Saturday with a late start. Restroom at trailhead. Didn’t see a kiosk to pay for nw forest pass and ranger station north bend was closed—did not get a ticket.
