We got on the trail at Sequim Bay State Park and walked west. The trail is a paved path for most of the part we hiked on the Olympic Discovery Trail. There are sections where tree roots are growing under the concrete and has been marked, for the most part, with bright spray paint. We crossed the Johnson Creek train tressel/bridge and continued west until we reached Simdars Road. We turned around at this point and headed back toward the state park. We had lunch at a picnic table east of Simdars Road, past fields of wild flowers and what looked to be an old homestead, before we reached Johnson Creek again. After lunch we walked back to the campground. Looking at maps and comparing our Fitbit walk details, we estimate we walked almost 6 miles round trip.
There are a few garbage cans once you pass Johnson Creek, when walking west. Along this part of the trail there are some doggie poop bag stations as well. There is a clean porta potty right before you reach the train tressel bridge at Johnson Creek when heading west. At Johnson Creek you have to leave the trail and walk on Whitefeather Way for a minute. But that stretch of road is closed for construction.
We saw lots of birds and squirrels. We also saw a deer and a snake. There was coyote scat on the side of the trail but didn’t see one. The bugs weren’t bad, and I was surprised we didn’t see more bees since so many flowers were in bloom. It’s a fun hike, great for exercise and walking your dog. You will be sharing the trail with bike riders, so be aware of your surroundings as you hike.
