Tiger Mountain Trail, K-3 Trail — Tuesday, Jun. 10, 2025

Just wanted to put up a notice that I had an encounter with a mountain lion on the TMT near the upper junction With K-3.  Animal was a juvenile, maybe two and a half feet at the shoulder.   Hopped onto the trail about 10 yards ahead of me and looked curious, but quickly turned to annoyance when I got loud and turned around and trotted down the trail ahead of me.

After about half a mile of following it, it melted into the ferns.

Given it's size, I don't think it would consider a full size human prey, but best to be cautious in this area for now.  Of course, by the time I write this, it could be over on East Tiger.

Picture is not of the animal just wanted to get it up to bring attention to the post.  Credit: Juergen & Christine Sohns

The trails feel very wild-lifey this season. Thanks for the heads up.

I believe that experts in mountain lion behavior tell us that juveniles are the most dangerous animals. Adults have generally established territories and stay away from where people usually go. Juveniles are looking to establish their own territory - and may not have learned to avoid people. They're more likely to be hungry and take chances.
