Trip Report

Upper Dungeness River, Goat Lake — Sunday, Jun. 15, 2025

Olympic Peninsula > Hood Canal

The trail is in excellent condition from TH to Camp Handy.  Trail up to goat lake is also in excellent condition, its just super steep!  No snow to worry about to get to goat lake, all clear now!  2hr 45 min there, 2hr back to car, 6 hour hike with breaks and a quick nap.  Super nice.

The main reason for this report.... I want to say that the Trail Head directions posted by the WTA will never get you to the trailhead.

It reads:

Head north on Highway 101 past Gardiner and Blyn. Roughly 1 mile north of Sequim Bay State Park, turn left on Palo Alto Road. Head south for 8 miles, then bear right onto Forest Service Road 2880. In 1.6 miles, bear right onto Forest Service Road 2870. Continue for 2.6 miles, bearing right at the Y in the road. Continue for 6.5 miles to the trailhead parking lot, located just across the bridge over the Dungeness River. There is a vault toilet at the trailhead.

What it should say:  (sorry i don't know exact mileage to replace the 2.6, but 2.6 leads to nothing)

Head north on Highway 101 past Gardiner and Blyn. Roughly 1 mile north of Sequim Bay State Park, turn left on Palo Alto Road. Head south for 8 miles, stay right at fork in road, then shortly after there is a hard right onto 2880. In 1.6 miles, STAY LEFT to continue onto Forest Service Road 2870. Continue for 3+ miles, bearing right at the Y in the road. Continue for 6.5 miles to the trailhead parking lot, located just across the bridge over the Dungeness River. There is a vault toilet at the trailhead.

2 hours I will never get back, almost gave up.  I don't own a smartphone for GPS.  But hey now I know how to connect Quilcene and Sequim with FS roads!  I'm not angry at all!
