π€ Conditions
-
Weather: Scattered light showers, some snow flurries once we got up to the high point. Mid 30's to low 40's depending on elevation and proximity to the lake.
-
Trail Conditions: Trail to Colchuck lake was obviously very well maintained, except for the pit toilets. Could have something to do with the recent closures, but they looked like they haven't been swapped out in a while. Would not recommend even opening them unless you have a very strong stomach. More snow on trail than anticipated, but show was firm enough to hold crampons well. Did not soften due to weather.
-
Water Availability: Colchuck lake, some snow melt once you start the ascent.
-
Bugs/Wildlife: very few bugs, probably due to the weather. Birds only wildlife spotted.
π₯Ύ Gear & Logistics
-
Route Finding: There is some variety of GPX tracks once you start ascending from the lake to get to the saddle - we found a climbers trail on the climber's right-most side of the gully that worked well and kept us off the snow as much as possible. It did involve some boulder hopping, though.
-
Gear Highlights: Used crampons and ice axes once we got to the snowfield, rope was not necessary for the portion of the trail we encountered. Probably would not recommend a rope if you are confident in your footwork.
- Time on the trail: Our party took about 13 hours to get from the trailhead to our high point, about 300 vertical ft from the saddle. We were a group of mostly beginners so I would imagine a smaller and more experienced team could cut this time down quite a bit.

Hey wanted to get out to bag this one 4 th of July. Sounds like snow was still good, not too icy yet? I am curious why yall turned around 300 ft from the saddle? Thanks so much

Snow was good, firm with ~1" of somewhat softer stuff on top. Honestly ideal for crampons in my opinion, but it was cloudy and not to much above freezing when we were out, so I can't say it will be the same if the weather is sunnier. We mainly turned around because the cloud that was covering the peak started to descend and impacted visibility, and it started snowing / raining. That and it was getting close to our turnaround time anyway. I would not say the route itself forced the turnaround.
