Finally visited the sand dunes on our trip to the east. We did not have enough time so stopped at the first dune, but already felt so impressive. The sand dunes are much larger than what I imagined by looking at all the pictures. It was fun to walk on it too, but it could be very hot on barefoot :)

The trail was in great condition, but on the way up we woke up enormous flying ants on the plants (I actually don’t know what they are) and they would hit our body and face. Not really biting but annoying. Interestingly they got very inactive on the way back, just sticking to the plants and did not bother again.

As earlier reports mentioned, lots of birds at the trailhead near the water. I wonder how they could hear their own calls in that noisy bird theater. There was one bird making train horn sound, resonating in the valley.

We also saw 2 elks on the island in Columbia River! Not sure if they swim or they got onto the island when water was low.

Access gravel road was wide and nice. Only saw one other hiker today.
