I hiked the old trail on the way up and the new trail on the way down. This is a pretty common loop that people do and I would highly recommend if you’re in good shape. When you first get to the trailhead, walk up near the upper parking lot Then walk around this gate. From there, about 100 yards past the gate, the new trailhead goes off to the left. If you keep going about .2 miles, you will reach the old trailhead. There are many signs at the old trailhead saying that this trail is very hard and many people need to get rescued.
The old trail is extremely steep and has a lot of roots. If the trail is wet, use extreme caution. This trail gains 3500 feet in less than 5/2 miles. You will eventually get to a section where the old trail and the new trail make an X. You can choose whichever way as they meet again soon.
The last section of a trail has a lot of rocks and a steeper. You will eventually get to the top of the trail and see many mountains like Mount Rainier, McClellan Butte, and Dirty Box Mountain.
On the way down, I would highly suggest the new trail because the old trail can get dangerous. The new trail does have a lot of fallen trees so be aware of that. The new trail is 5 miles down.
Please don’t get hurt because many people have been rescued recently. Good luck!
