Trip Report

Grand Park via Lake Eleanor — Monday, Jul. 7, 2025

Mount Rainier Area > NE - Sunrise/White River
Lake Eleanor early morning

Started early and hiked to Grand Park via Lake Eleanor with the goal of seeing bears. I did not see any bears. The hiker that was the first one through the park did see a bear before it ran into hiding. Not everyone gets to see these beautiful animals.

Forest road 73 is about 9 miles to the trailhead from 410. The first section has a lot of potholes. Some of the road is in pretty great shape while other parts are rough. Some other reports talk about a landslide covering the road. The slide is just after the Huckleberry Creek bridge. Photo 4 is my attempt at getting a picture of the slide. From the picture it can be seen that cars have been driving over park of the slide. As I drove over it, the car leaned to one side since the road is not level.

The trail has no issues. Flowers are blooming with more to come.

Recommendation: if planning to hike through Grand Park, I suggest that you turn right at the far end and hike a half mile on the North Loop trail to get to the West Fork White River viewpoint.
