The best hike I have ever done. Just a supremely gorgeous walk. First ~1.5 miles were through the forest with a pretty easy climb (~750 feet total), then passed through some low lying brush, then our first rock field. This is where it gets steep. Very exposed, but brilliant views in all directions and you can see your destination. The trail leads through another short forest before going through another rock field - this one takes you to the pass. Lot of switchbacks up a very exposed part of the trail - we put on lots of sunscreen and we needed it. After seemingly an endless climb up rocks, we were rewarded with the best view I have seen. Once at the pass, we stayed right, passed the "NPS BOUNDARY" post and walked another ~0.15 miles where we saw a field of blooming wildflowers. Immaculate! The hike down had to be done with a lot of care with all the rocks - each of us found a hiking stick and they proved quite useful.
