Trip Report

Lower Big Quilcene River — Saturday, Jul. 12, 2025

Olympic Peninsula > Hood Canal
Looks like a dino

Arrived TH around 10am, the lot (that fits about 9 cars comfortably) was full. We parked just outside on the road behind another car that had already done the same. Outhouse fully stocked with tons of toilet paper. There's even a garbage can inside!

Nice, flat hike that is doable for small children. Also great because you're shaded with lots of tree coverage. We saw lots of families coming back in from their hike and/or backpacking trek. We even saw one group of dads with kids and one dad was pulling a wagon behind him ... I don't think I personally would want to pull a wagon but just sharing that it is doable for the willing!

We hiked 5.5 miles roundtrip, taking a long lunch break by the river (at the second bridge I think?) We didn't make it to the campsite but there was space at this part to sit/hang out next to the river. We shared the space with another family. It's not that large of an area so may have felt a bit cramped with another family.

The water felt super cold to me and my family but the other kids didn't seem to mind, they were running around and playing a lot in the river.

Lots of butterflies and dragonflies around. One butterfly kept landing on a few of us and the kiddo and doggo got a kick out of that.

When we arrived back to the car around 3:30pm (yep, that's hiking with a preschooler!) there were three spots that had opened up in the parking lot but there were more cars parked along up the road. There isn't a ton of spots along the road so a few cars were quite a ways up.
