Big Cedar Tree - Kalaloch — Friday, Apr. 19, 2024

Olympic Peninsula > Pacific Coast
Tree of Life

I went on a mini vacation to the delightful Tokeland Hotel with my dog last year. It was amazing! On the way home I made a wrong turn leaving Aberdeen and found myself on the west side of the Olympic Peninsula, rather than on the 101 towards Shelton, WA.

I passed by Kalaloch Beach campground and trailheads and decided to make the best of my situation. What a happy accident! My dog and I parked at the day use area of the campground and decided to explore. This was a busy campground so be courteous of campers and their pets and kids. We found an easy trail to the beach. It's a rocky beach so wear good shoes. We walked for a short distance to the Tree of Life. The roots are dry and the tree is sinking lower than I expected, probably due to weight and erosion. Nevertheless it was impressive. You can still climb under it and sit on a rock if you wish. The water is beautiful and there is plenty of shells. I'm still a kid at heart so I get excited by a cool rock or a cool shell. I would love to come back and camp here someday.

Carry in and carry out trash and recycling. Bring water and sunscreen on hot days. Stay safe and enjoy!
