An epic hike for me today and hidden lake did not disappoint.
Trailhead Access & parking: like others have indicated, expect a bumpy ride – the road to the Hidden Lake Trailhead is riddled with lots of potholes (roughly 4.5 mi to the main trailhead. A high-clearance vehicle is recommended. Parking lot holds about 20 cars comfortably. When we got there at 8am, it was nearly 2/3rds full.
Weather: A classic peekaboo day – clouds drifted in and out, offering teasing glimpses of surrounding peaks before pulling back the curtain for some truly epic views.
Trail Conditions: Trail was in good shape overall – a few muddy patches, river crossings but nothing impassable. The first section is full of overgrowth and bushwhacking. Wildflowers still blooming in pockets, and snowfields have mostly melted out with a couple of them not posing any major trouble while crossing; we did'nt use micro spikes. Poles and good traction shoes are a must! This must be a very popular trail as we saw several backpackers on the trail!
Highlights:
-
Once the clouds cleared, the panoramic views were incredible – definitely a camera-worthy day.
-
The ridgeline approaching the lookout offers jaw-dropping scenes in every direction.
-
Note: The lookout was occupied when we reached it, so plan on enjoying your snack break just below or along the ridge if you're hoping for solitude.
Tips:
-
Start early to beat the crowd and maximize your chance for clear views.
-
Bring layers – the weather changes quickly, especially on a peekaboo day like today.
8.2mi RT, 6hrs moving time, 3300ft gain, All in all, a memorable hike with alpine drama and just enough mystery in the weather to make those moments of clarity even more rewarding.

I think that's a ptarmigan (member of the grouse species).

Thank you! No bug bites. Just a few buzzing here and there.

Thanks for your detailed report! When you say a high-clearance vehicle is recommended, does that include something like a Subaru Forester? I'd like to give this hike a shot, but I don't want to drive all the way out there and get stuck!

A couple craters are really bumpy and nasty but just drive slow and carefully maneuver. Someone had even brought their tesla! Forester should be fine.Good luck!
