Coal Lake — Sunday, Jul. 20, 2025

North Cascades > Mountain Loop Highway

Decided to check this lake out after Big Four Ice Caves.

Gravel road to the trail (and pass lake and independence lakes) has a decent number of potholes. However, the more annoying problem were some stretches of exposed bumpy rock, but this is passable in a high clearance vehicle. Road can be narrow, so look out for passing cars. There are a few turnouts here and there.

Bathroom at the parking lot did not smell at all but had no toilet paper. The parking lot itself has room for around 6 cars. There were 3 when we got there around 4:30 p.m.

The walk to the lake is extremely short and easy. Not overgrown.

The lake itself is a nice secluded gem with a deep turquoise color. Some people were fishing and kayaking.

AviR on Coal Lake

I was up on Saturday and was surprised that the privy was decent, despite being riddled with bullet holes
