Cape Alava Loop (Ozette Triangle) by Loren Drummond

Our first time all the way around the full loop, backpacking with another family. Our 5 year old has been backpacking with us for a few years (and hiked an out and back to Alava two years ago), but this was his first multi-night, and it was perfect. Easy (trails out and back) and challenging (beach section) in perfect balance. No wonder this is a classic. We would have enjoyed another night at either camp, so if you've got the time to stretch to 4 days, 3 nights, do it.

Highlights: Cape Alava is always so beautiful, and we got it in a misty mood. Sandy beach funtimes at with many other families on our second and third day. We were even treated to an evening of whale spotting (humpback was the general consensus) from Sand Point.

Low lights: a little buggy on the way in and out, but nothing like the cascades this year. Also the tannins in the water clogged not one, but two filters.

Plenty of water in both streams, but go ready to backflush your filters and maybe carry a bit of extra water or fuel to boil.

Privies are in good shape, though the one at Cape Alava was stuck 😱 when we got there. My partner and another woman, heroes that they are, dug into the problem and got it working.
