Left Tacoma around 930am and arrived at the TH by 1230. There are logging trucks that come barreling down the paved road towards 101 so be mindful on your drive in. The gravel road isn’t too bad, there were some good sized potholes the closer you get to the campground/TH.
Fording the river was a unique and exhilarating way to start the hike. The first portion is quick and easy, then comes the big Queets where the flow was not too strong but it can be deep. I was between upper thigh and waist for this crossing. Felt very comfortable though, the last portion is smaller but the water is moving much quicker. Changed to pants and shoes after and quickly found where the trail picks up on the other bank. Took my time hiking to Spruce Bottom camp, many beautiful trees to gawk at. The first field/clearing to cross was easy, the second is much bigger and this is where I lost the trail for just a bit. My advice is to stay north through these, there will be a small wooden plank bridge at the end and you’ll know your on trail. Arriving at camp I scouted around and found a great spot by the river to spend the night. Saw a family of ducks, a frog and hummingbirds. Upon returning everything that I wasn’t sure about the first day was much easier. Had the whole trail to myself and didn’t see anyone until I was back in my car leaving the trail 2 cars heading in. If you’re seeking solitude this is a great hike.
