On our way, we stopped at the Visitor Center in Port Angeles where we got some very helpful information about trail options and conditions. We also learned about options to use the Clam Transit bus service to create a loop hike from Klahhane to Switchback Trail. While we didn't take this option, having all the info was still very helpful. Highly recommend stopping and speaking to a ranger!
We arrived at the parking lot around noon on Sunday, July 22nd. The parking lot was busy, but there was a steady stream of people arriving and leaving so parking was not hard to find.
We started off on the High Ridge trail and connected with Klahhane Trail. Enjoyed stunning views in every direction and some scattered wildflowers in the meadows. We also saw some wildlife - lots of deer and a massive raven.
Be aware that parts of this trail can be very narrow and have steep drop offs - if you are not a fan of heights, you may want to avoid this. We didn't go all the way to the end of the trail and decided to turn around as my friends were starting to feel exhausted, likely due to the altitude. But even if you only get to go out a mile or so (the Sunrise viewpoint makes a nice turn around spot), the views are well worth it!
Unfortunately, towards the end of the hike we saw rangers closing the trail and ambulance and other emergency vehicles arriving due to a cougar attack. You can find more information about this in the news. It was a very sad incident but I believe the injured child is recovering. I am so grateful for amazing park rangers and staff for all they do ❤️
