Trip Report

Hidden Lake Lookout — Saturday, Jul. 12, 2025

North Cascades > North Cascades Highway - Hwy 20
Alps

Attempt Jul 2022, was chased off snowfield below lookout by angry male mtn goat. additional sighting of flying squirrel in woods @ trailhead

New Attempt Jul 2025

Road going up has large ruts and potholes. Certain people in big trucks added several new potholes notable on the drive back down. RESPECT THE TRAIL!

Day 1 Jul 12 Began Ascent at 12:30pm

ascended to meadows low difficulty. 1L water + filter, no poles. very hot, many bugs! streams to refill water were key. Snow fields a little iffy without poles, easy to slide. Alpine areas pristine. Refueled & refilled below glacier area at the bigger stream then ascended to lookout. Very nice view of hidden lake and can see all the way to San Juan islands. Can see: Baker, Shuksan, Glacier Peak, Index, and even a faint Rainier and a few more i forgot the names of.

Lookout gets very warm at night and lots of mosquitos. Mice live there & will crawl on your toes. Lookout cramped beware of snoring campers.

Day 2 Jul 13 Awoke at 4:30am cooked ate. Watched Sunrise very nice. San Juan lights visible and shining! Descent ok, tons of melt since previous evening - several snow patches totally gone. Muddy, 1 slip, dont get cocky. Saw marmot posing on a rock. Meadows SOAKED by morning dew, got wet.

10/10 hike, but compared to how it used to be, there are way to many people! Instagram & Tiktok have made this hidden gem a well known gem i guess. 100% worth your time.
