Had a gorgeous hike up to Tamanos today -- and we saw a bear. She was down by the Owyhigh Lakes (as we were descending) and we were up on the trail 400 feet away. She was munching away and disregarded us completely, but just a heads up! Two clear bear scat -- one recent -- right on the trail.
The trail up to the lakes through the old growth is lovely, mostly shaded, moderate grade. (Sign says 3.5 miles to lakes from TH.) A short while after the lakes you take a hard right up through gorgeous but STEEP meadows - full Julie Andrews vibe -- to reach ridge. Saddle is a great stopping point but we went on to (false?) summit, probably 1- 1.5 miles and maybe 1300 feet above Owyhigh. Gorgeous gorgeous views all around and wildflowers: lupine, scarlet paintbrush, pasqueflower seedheads, phlox, and lots more. Good hard climb and some loose rock near the top but views grand everywhere. Bugs a bit of an issue especially in the meadowy spots.
Highly recommend but keep an eye out for the bear!

The meadows are truly a sight to behold. They are almost as impressive if not just as impressive as the view of Bear Park from the ridge walk from Brown Pk to Slide Mt. Did this last year. Saw the bear in the same place. We never saw another person the whole time. Mid week in July. I stopped at the saddle, Georg went to the top. I have been there, but the heat and my age seem to be working against me.
