Norse Peak, Basin Lake — Saturday, Aug. 9, 2025

Mount Rainier Area > Chinook Pass - Hwy 410
Moonrise as viewed from my tent

I was on the struggle bus and seem to have a sensitivity to elevation because I got so nauseated on this hike! Luckily my friend recognized the symptoms from her own struggles with elevation and was patient (and the day was beautiful!) We descended to basin lake to camp and I improved considerably at the lower elevation- we were both queasy again once we got above 6000 on the way out the second day.

saw lots of elk sign but no elk, were graced with the sight of mountain goats just after sunrise. Tons of birds! Osprey and red tail hawk and ravens and tons of song birds and jays. Moonrise was unbelievable! Coyotes woke me up howling! Really the perfect night in the wilderness despite the struggle.

note: if you’re using AllTrails the “Norse peak view trail” is not maintained and should not be used.

Stunning Tahoma views
Beautiful meadow
Mountain goats!!!
