We definitely took this hike slower than the average hiker, but the relaxed pace was perfect for soaking up this trail's natural wonders: young trees sprouting through the charred husks of leviathans; moss in all sorts of whimsical varieties; silky mushrooms larger than my fists. The first half of the trail is relatively easy. Keep your eyes out for a rest spot about halfway up: a silver stream trickling down a sheer rock face, with the chance to sprawl across sun-warmed boulders for a brief respite.
From there the trail ascends relentlessly. Meaty roots grasping across boulders form natural steps. There are lots of exposed rocks, which would likely be treacherous when wet, and the bigger ones were a bit difficult to climb over (as a 5'2" person). Here in the deepest part of the forest life spills out of every dark crevice, from lustrous ferns to plush moss carpets to fragile wild berry bushes.
The lake itself is unforgettable. At 70 degrees on a windy and cloudy day, the water was still the perfect temperature for a refreshing dip. A trail on the other side of Lunch Rock will take you around the edge of the lake for more secluded swimming spots and a more intimate look at the dramatic purple spires enclosing the water, though you will have to scramble across numerous rocks and boulders, taking care not to damage the native plants. Mid-afternoon, the winds changed direction, carrying with them the smoky scent of a distant blaze. We took that as our cue to leave, pausing only to contemplate the shy, emergent autumn foliage overlooking the jagged blue silhouettes of the vastness below.
All in all a spectacular trail, bring toilet paper as there is none in the bathroom. Or don't, up to you.
Ascent: 10:15-2:30 (Wednesday morning- lot 75% full)
Lake: 2:30-4:30
Descent: 4:30-8:00
(Keep in mind these times are slower than the average hiker, this trip did not include the detour to Bridal Veil Falls)
