Green Mountain - Gold Creek Trail — Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2025

Olympic Peninsula > Kitsap Peninsula

Yesterday I hiked up Green Mountain, in Kitsap County, using Craig Romano’s guidebook and a DNR map. It was not a fun experience.

The maps showed a scant few trails--the ones that almost everybody uses. I know that a map can look too "busy", and some concession must be made to readability, but the land I walked had also all kinds of unmarked trails--social trails, short cuts, biker suicide trails. Which ones were intended for your readers was often not obvious. Signage was scanty. Have you been on the Kitsap County heritage park trails?  They know how to do signage!

Towards the top, the trails I took (where did I go wrong?) were painfully steep, loose, chewed up minefields of rocks and roots.

When I got home, I found a 2019 map from Recreation and Conservation Office showing "Phase 1 Trail System Expansion". It looked like an explosion in a spaghetti factory. If and when all those trails are built, I sure hope they come with first-class signage and walkability.
