Trip Report

Lake Caroline — Saturday, Aug. 16, 2025

Central Cascades > Leavenworth Area
Ridge View from the Trail

We decided at the last minute to head to Lake Caroline despite the warm weather.  Thank you to the Chelan County SAR crew managing the trailheads with a friendly smile.

TRAIL: The trail up the valley to the intersection just below Eightmile Lake is in good shape few a few narrow spots and a few muddy patches.  After you turn right to head up the ridge, the trail is moderately overgrown and slippery in places so be sure to watch your step.  I missed a couple of steps/rocks because I could not see through the bushes near my knees and ankles.

The ascent from the junction is very exposed to the sun (or the rain), so be prepared with adequate water and sun/rain cover.  This part goes through an old burn area so the views are pretty good too.

FAUNA: No bugs.  and, unfortunately, only a few birds.  We did see a couple of chipmunks and ground squirrels, though.

ROAD: The road is getting pretty bad.  I saw several sedans on the road, and even a 'tricked-out Accord.'  Take it slow.  But if if you have a choice, take the SUV or truck.

PARKING: Lastly, Eightmile Lake and Lake Caroline are collateral damage from this summer’s Lake Colchuck popularity. Cars were parked all the way down the hill and many people were walking over a mile to get to the Stuart Lake trailhead. People were asking the SAR volunteers where to go. Sigh.

If you think I am kidding, see this SAR video taken about 20 minutes after we parked near the Eightmile TH.
