What an amazing place to spend the night. We lucked out, there were two other groups there on a Monday night. Weather was ok on the way in, hard to see the top of Shuksan, but the next morning the clouds parted early and we had amazing views. Campsites are all over the place, all along the east and south side of the lake (south end for us was the best area). There are some campsites down a bit from the outflow of the lake as well. Hike in and out was fine for my son, took some time on the uphill parts, but easily doable. He was super excited to see things that he hasn't before, first Marmot, first Pika. The hike has 3 different types, which makes it fun. A forest part, a meadow part and alpine part, so it really shows the Pacific Northwest mountain environment
One huge issue, TRASH and campfires. If you pack it in, pack it out PLEASE. We picked up two mountain house food bags, and about 100ft of monofilament (much of it in 6 to 12" pieces), along with assorted other small pieces of trash. I think the food might have been a mistake, but the monofilament was someone just being lazy, tying line and cutting off the ends and just throwing it on the ground. It was all over the south end camping area. Also, campfires are banned, we found evidence of someone having a fire at the same area and burning (sort of) their trash in it.
Loved the hike and the location, highly recommend going, and of course follow the Leave No Trace principles.
