Puget Sound and Islands > Whidbey Island

We started at the ferry terminal on Whidbey Island, coming over as pedestrians on the ferry from Port Townsend. It was a gorgeous 70-something temperature sunny day.

We walked along the paved path by the RV camp to start this mini hike and then got on a well-groomed gravel path to the open field (3 football fields size) below the lighthouse where multiple kites were flying. Very picturesque! We walked path the former massive gun turret cement structures, and say two preserved WWI or WWII steel cannons. No railings, so watch your step.

The lighthouse free tours from the docents/volunteers were educational, and learned more women ran the show than is officially acknowledged. The 2-flight trip up the winding steel staircase to the top of the lighthouse was fun as well. Flush toilets just down from the lighthouse to the right.

Then we went past the big tree on the left side of the lighthouse to start a little path that goes to a larger part of Fort Casey, but this this is just a half mile out-and-back, with some great look-out spots from the bluffs. Huge eagle nest along the way, but didn’t see them.

We came back mostly along the beach, which was very nice and serene, making this 3.1 mile easy hike for us.

Highly recommended, especially on a sunny, slightly breezy day.
