Cascade Pass and Sahale Arm — Sunday, Aug. 24, 2025

North Cascades > North Cascades Highway - Hwy 20

If you’re chasing alpine magic, Sahale Arm delivers in spades. But like any good adventure, it makes you earn it—starting with the drive.

Cascade River Road is a 23-mile gauntlet of tooth-rattling washboards and pothole roulette. It took us a full hour to reach the trailhead, and by the time we arrived, our vehicle suspension and our bones had aged a decade. The parking lot was packed, a testament to Sahale’s stellar reputation. There’s a pit toilet, but let’s just say the anaerobic micro-critters were eating very well — the ammonia levels could've cleared lungs and sinuses from a mile out. Even the bugs looked stunned.

From the first few steps, the trail was a stunner. Moderately steep, well-maintained, and accompanied by blueberries and wildflowers even in the heart of summer. The views started in earnest relatively early and just kept stacking up: glacier-carved valleys, jagged peaks, and meadows that looked like they were painted by a landscape artist.

Just before Cascade Pass, we ran into a mountain goat and her kid on the trail. See seemed undisturbed by our presence and practically walked by me on the trail. She was panting in the heat, and I have to say so were we —guzzling water as I was. If you’re doing this hike on a sunny day in the middle of summer, bring more water than you think you need. Seriously.  I was glad I did.

The trail was lively that day...lots of fellow hikers...but I didn't feel to cramped. We chatted with a group of women from New Jersey and Colorado who were making a cross-country adventure out of it. Everyone was friendly, sweaty, and slightly delirious with beauty overload.

It was a scorcher. Those without enough water were visibly struggling, and shade was a rare commodity. But the descent brought sweet relief—Cascade Pass offered breeze shade that felt better than ice cream.

Sahale Arm never disappoints. Between the sweeping views, alpine meadows, and wildlife encounters, it’s a quintessential North Cascades experience. Just prep for the drive, pack extra water, and brace yourself for a trail that’s as rewarding as it is demanding.
