Point Defiance Park — Thursday, Sep. 4, 2025

Puget Sound and Islands > Seattle-Tacoma Area
Mountaineers Fir

We chose this hike because it had the best air quality in the area. AQI at the park was in the low 20's for much of the day while just a mile or 2 inland it was 80-120.

In my opinion, this park has the nicest waterfront old growth forest in Puget Sound (Hoypus point is a close 2nd). It's a beautiful mix of big old Doug Fir mixed with Madrona, Big Leaf Maple, Red Cedar and Hemlock. The forest is also very healthy.

The southern part of the park includes the zoo and more manicuref gardens. There are several huge Sequoias that were apparently planted 100-150 years ago. The conditions here are apparently ideal for Sequoias even though they are not native.

Tacoma Metro Parks made the excellent decision to permanently close the outer loop of 5 Mile Drive to cars. Now it's an excellent route for walkers, bikes and wheelchairs. Bravo!

6.5 mile loop, 400 ft

It's such a beautiful place. The green feels like it can heal anything.
