It has been a lot of years since I hiked this trail. At 71 years old, it was tough due to how steep the trail is. Still, it only took us less than two hours to reach the top. Our son, who is almost 35, really didn't seem to mind except for the times he stopped and waited for us to catch up!
On the last ridge, the Larch were starting to turn and it was very pretty. Unfortunately, the lookout was closed. Mostly hazy skies with some clearing. However, we had the top to ourselves for a nice, long lunch break. The trip down only took an hour and we met two hikers heading to the top for an overnight stay.
The drive to the trail head takes awhile if you go slow enough to avoid the many rocks and pot holes. There was only one corner where we were thankful we were in the Grand Cherokee. Otherwise, any car could have made it. If I'm lucky, I will do this again!
