A last-minute decision took us to Lundin Peak this morning, and it did not disappoint! The trail was in good shape overall, with just a few rocky sections and a couple of creek crossings. We followed it to the end but couldn’t find a safe route to the summit, so we turned back and enjoyed lunch at the pass instead. The views were incredible with bursts of fall colors, and blueberries were still plentiful—such a perfect snack. Best of all, we had the trail completely to ourselves. What an amazing way to wrap up September in the mountains!

Depends on what you call "safe". About 50 ft or so before the trail ends there is a way to downclimb to the West and then traverse to the East summit of Lundin, then downclimb to the saddle between the East and West (true summit) peaks. It's class 3 / 4 with some exposure. The West summit is more involved and I have never done it. I've heard both class 4 scramble and 5th class. Maybe if you know exactly where to go there is a 4th class route?
