This hike is popular for good reason- stunning views, fall colors, and, of course, larches. Considering the popularity of this trail, I would highly recommend avoiding it on weekends during peak season. Try off-peak times and days (sunset, sunrise, weekdays). The trailhead is likely to be chaotic and the path like a superhighway on fall weekend days. We arrived at 8am Monday to a full lot and cars starting to line highway 20. When we left around 2pm, many many more cars lined both sides going in both directions.
With so many visitors, please be sure to leave no trace, follow good trail etiquette, and stay off the roped-off and ‘closed for restoration’ areas. Trail is steep and muddy at times. If it gets below freezing, be prepared for ice/slick conditions… poles, good boots, and traction will be needed.
